Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 17, 2026

Givens Field Tools is a free field calculator app (cord volume, tree height, wildfire risk, and plant identification). We do not require an account, we do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising in the app.

Who this applies to

This policy describes how Givens Field Tools (“the app”) handles information. The app is offered by Givens Fire & Forestry and published on Google Play by Ryebread (the developer account).

If you use our website calculators at givensfireandforestry.com/toolbox, that use is covered by this page for the mobile app only. Website analytics may be handled separately by our site provider.

Information we collect

We do not collect personal information on our own servers. Specifically:

  • No name, email, or account is required
  • No analytics or advertising SDKs in the app
  • No data is sent to Givens servers — the app has no backend of its own
  • We do not continuously track your location, contacts, photos, or microphone

The wildfire risk calculator is different: when you tap calculate (or choose “use my current location”), the app sends the address or coordinates needed for that one request directly from your device to public data services (see below). We do not receive or store those requests on our systems.

The plant & tree identifier is also different: when you tap “Identify plant,” the app sends the photo(s) you selected (up to five per plant) directly from your device to Pl@ntNet for species identification, through a small proxy we operate so our API key stays off the device. We do not receive, store, or retain those photos on Givens systems. Pl@ntNet’s handling of uploaded images is governed by Pl@ntNet’s terms.

Data stored on your device

To save your work between sessions, the app stores calculator inputs locally on your phone (for example: log measurements, tree height values, log names, wildfire property addresses, optional weather overrides, and the last GPS coordinates you used for a wildfire check). This stays on your device using standard Android local storage.

Plant identifier photos are kept in the app only while you are building a queue for the current identification. They are not saved to long-term app storage or sent anywhere until you tap “Identify plant.” After results are shown, queued photos are cleared from the app session.

You can clear this data anytime by clearing the app’s storage in Android Settings, or by using clear/reset options inside the cord calculator.

If you use Android backup features, your device may include app data in backups managed by Google or your device manufacturer. We do not receive those backups.

When the app connects outward

The cord calculator and tree height tools work fully offline. The wildfire risk calculator and plant & tree identifier need an internet connection when you run a calculation or identification.

When you calculate wildfire risk, your device may send an address or coordinates to these public services:

  • US Census Geocoder and OpenStreetMap Nominatim — turn an address into map coordinates (and reverse-geocode GPS to a readable label)
  • USGS LANDFIRE — fuel models, slope, and canopy for the pin location
  • Open-Meteo — current weather and 16-day forecast for the area
  • National Weather Service — active fire-weather alerts when issued

Those providers receive only what is needed for the lookup (typically coordinates, and an address string if you typed one). Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies. We do not control third-party services.

When you identify a plant, your device sends compressed photo(s) to:

  • Pl@ntNet — species identification against the North-Central U.S. flora project (via our proxy; images are not stored on Givens servers)

Those uploads contain only the plant photo(s) you chose. We do not attach your name, address, or account to the request. Pl@ntNet may retain or process images under its own policies.

The app also opens external links when you choose to:

  • Call — opens your phone dialer to Givens Fire & Forestry ((406) 539-4224)
  • Website — opens your browser to givensfireandforestry.com
  • NOAA outlook links — seasonal drought and forecast pages linked from wildfire results

Location permission

The wildfire tool may ask for foreground location only if you tap “use my current location instead.” The app does not read GPS in the background. You can always enter a property address instead and decline location access.

Camera & photo permissions

The plant identifier may ask for camera access only if you tap “Take Photo,” and for photo library access only if you tap “Upload Photos.” The app does not access your camera or gallery in the background. You can decline permission and still use the other tools in the app.

Children’s privacy

The app is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Security

Calculator inputs are stored locally on your device. Wildfire lookups and plant identifications go over HTTPS directly to public data providers or Pl@ntNet (via our proxy); we do not operate a server that receives or stores those requests or photos. No method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, but exposure through our own systems is limited because we do not run a backend for this app.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
